Enhancing agricultural productivity Govt’s top priority: PM Shehbaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting value addition and increasing exports of agricultural products are among the government’s top priorities.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad today (Tuesday) on matters related to the agriculture sector, the Prime Minister directed the formulation of a comprehensive short and long-term strategy. This strategy should focus on promoting the use of modern farm machinery, high-quality seeds, geographic crop planning and the provision of easy loans to farmers.
Shehbaz Sharif instructed that agricultural research centers be made more effective to boost per-acre yields and called for the integration of cutting-edge research through public-private partnerships.
To harness the potential of artificial intelligence and modern technology in agriculture, the Prime Minister advised engaging internationally renowned experts. He also directed the preparation of a strategy for developing small and medium-sized agro-industries to produce export-quality goods through value addition of agricultural commodities.
Highlighting the importance of food security, the Prime Minister stressed the need to guide farmers in cultivating high-value crops and making Pakistan self-sufficient in food production. He underscored the importance of a consultative process involving farmers and other stakeholders to gather practical suggestions.
The Prime Minister also called for stronger coordination and cooperation with provincial governments to accelerate agricultural development.
Addressing the challenges posed by climate change, Shehbaz Sharif emphasized supporting farmers in adopting climate-resilient seeds and modern farming techniques. In light of changing weather patterns and rainfall, he called for comprehensive planning for cotton cultivation in new suitable areas, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, following detailed consultations with provincial authorities.
He further said that research and planning should be undertaken to incorporate bio-fuels into the country’s energy mix.
During the meeting, participants were briefed on the production of major Rabi and Kharif crops over the past year, the challenges faced by farmers, proposed strategies, and future plans. Updates were also shared on the implementation of government reforms and the impact of climate change on agriculture.
The Prime Minister directed that a detailed strategy for further reforms in the agriculture sector be submitted promptly.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, agricultural experts, and senior officials from relevant departments.
