8 killed as torrential monsoon rains batter Karachi, parts of Sindh

Rescue officials confirmed that a 65-year-old man, Muhammad Ishaq, died of electrocution in North Karachi.
In Gulistan-e-Jauhar, a woman and three children were killed when a wall collapsed.
An 8-year-old boy, Abdullah, died in a similar incident in Orangi Town, while a 24-year-old man was electrocuted in DHA Phase 6.
Another 28-year-old man lost his life in a fire at a petrol pump in Malir.
The rainfall was not limited to Karachi alone. Showers were also reported in Tando Allahyar, Thatta, Gharo, Gaju, Sakro, Dhabichi, Hyderabad, Matiari, Matli, and Talhar.
According to the Met Office, Karachi recorded over 100 mm of rain on Tuesday.
Gulshan-e-Hadeed received the highest rainfall with 145 mm, followed by Kemari at 137 mm, Jinnah Terminal at 135 mm, Old Airport at 125 mm, Saadi Town 123 mm, Gulistan-e-Jauhar 122.4 mm, DHA/Clifton 121 mm, Shahrah-e-Faisal 114 mm, and Surjani Town 111.2 mm.
Other notable measurements include Korangi with 96.6 mm, Nazimabad 82 mm, Masroor Base 75 mm, Gulshan-e-Maymar 75.2 mm, while Orangi Town recorded the lowest at 66.2 mm.
Light showers also fell in Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Airport, North Nazimabad, and Surjani, while heavier rainfall was reported in Nazimabad, FB Area, Garden, Saddar, and Clifton.
Rainfall also hit II Chundrigar Road, Defense, Korangi, Hyderabad, Islamkot, Obaro Kotri, Chhachro, Umerkot, Tando Adam, Sanghar, Hala, and New Saeedabad.
Meanwhile, intermittent heavy showers continued in Daharki and surrounding areas since late Monday night.
Water accumulation turned low-lying neighborhoods into virtual ponds, though the weather became pleasant after the downpour.
Intermittent rain with strong winds entered second day and as a result of which many feeders tripped and power supply suspended in various areas.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Daharki and surrounding areas.
Moreover, heavy rain also continued in Khairpur Nathan Shah city and its surroundings.
Low-lying areas flooded due to rain and power supply suspended across the city.
School van stuck in Nazimabad
A school van stuck in a ditch in Nazimabad area of Karachi due to rainwater accumulation.
According to report, children were taken out of the vehicle and shifted to safer place.
However, efforts were underway to pull out the school van.
Light rain in some areas and heavy rain in others was continuing. After rainwater accumulated on streets and roads the administration disappeared from view.
Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has ordered all relevant agencies to remain on high alert as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect the region.
Expressing profound sorrow over reports of fatalities during the rains, the CM emphasised the urgent need for strict monitoring of drains and nullahs to mitigate urban flooding.
To ensure a prompt response, Mr Shah directed that all necessary machinery and personnel be kept on standby for the swift disposal of rainwater.
He specifically instructed the Mayor of Karachi to confirm that the equipment is operational, and staff are mobilised for immediate action.
Considering the severe weather conditions, the public is advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of maintaining coordination among the district administration, police, and municipal bodies at all times.
Additionally, Murad has instructed the traffic police to remain vigilant in low-lying and high-traffic areas, guiding the public during the inclement weather. Citizens are urged to keep a safe distance from electric poles and fragile infrastructure to ensure their safety.

Areas experienced torrential rain include Tariq Road, Azizabad, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Boat Basin, Liaquatabad, Hassan Square, North Nazimabad, SITE Area, Clifton, Defence, Qayyumabad, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Airport, Quaidabad, Malir, Landhi, and Korangi.
Other parts of the city, including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Scheme 33, Safora Chowrangi, Malir Cantt and its surroundings, North Karachi, Manghopir, Surjani Town, and Taiser Town, also witnessed heavy rainfall, while North Nazimabad and adjoining areas reported thunderstorms accompanied by intense showers.
Three people were killed and three injured in three separate incidents of lightning strikes during the rains in Thar today.
One person died after lightning struck a house in Pasol village of Nangarparkar. A man and a woman died after lightning struck two houses in Kaloi city.
NDMA issues alert as torrential rains threaten Punjab, KP, Balochistan in next 12–24 hours
National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides across multiple regions over the next 12 to 24 hours.
According to the advisory, torrential downpours are expected in northern Punjab, including Murree, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, and Attock.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
Moderate to heavy showers are forecast in Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, and Chiniot, while intermittent rain is likely in Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, and Sargodha. Localized waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas.
Southern and central Punjab districts—Bhakkar, Layyah, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan—are also expected to receive rainfall, with risks of flash flooding and stream overflow.
In northern regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa particularly Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, Bajaur, and Mohmand heavy rain may trigger landslides and soil erosion.
Local administrations are monitoring vulnerable zones and have advised precautionary measures.
Several districts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Qilla Saifullah, Loralai, Mastung, Noshki, and Barkhan, are likely to experience heavy rainfall.
Torrential showers are also forecast in Sibi, Dera Bugti, Sui, Kharan, Khuzdar, Kalat, Awaran, Turbat, Washuk, Hingol, and Gadani.
The NDMA cautioned that flash floods may affect low-lying and urban areas, while landslides remain a threat in hilly terrain.
Traffic disruption is anticipated along the Karakoram Highway and adjoining routes, including Tor Ghar, Battagram, Shangla, Lower Kohistan, and Hunza roads, due to possible landslides and blockages.
The NDMA has directed provincial and district administrations, PDMAs, rescue services, and law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert and ensure the availability of personnel and equipment for immediate response.
Monsoon rain alert in Punjab during next 48-hour
Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Tuesday issued a monsoon rain alert for various districts of Punjab during next 24 hours to 48 hours.
According to spokesperson, rains are expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, and Sialkot from August 19 to August 22, 2025. Rainfall is also likely in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Rajanpur.
Director General PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia instructed commissioners and deputy commissioners across the province to remain alert.
He said, as per the directives of the Punjab Chief Minister, district administrations have been issued alerts.
He also expressed concerns about a rise in water levels in rivers and adjoining streams due to the expected monsoon rains.
The DG PDMA further warned of possible flash floods in storm drains and urban flooding in major cities.
Alerts have been issued to the Health, Irrigation, Construction and Communications, Local Government, and Livestock departments.
He has requested public to take precautionary measures in case of bad weather.
The DG advised the public to stay indoors during storms, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep children away from water channels and electricity poles in low-lying areas. In case of emergencies, citizens can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.
