Eighth monsoon spell hits Punjab tomorrow, flood alerts out
The eighth spell of monsoon rains is set to begin across Punjab from August 23, with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issuing a high alert over possible heavy rainfall and rising river levels.
According to PDMA Punjab, from August 23 to 27, torrential rains in the upper catchment areas may increase water flow in rivers.
Western winds are expected to enter the province’s northern regions from the night of August 22, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms.
Rainfall is predicted in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Mianwali, Khushab, Sargodha, Jhang, Nankana Sahib, Toba Tek Singh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.
The PDMA spokesperson warned of possible flooding in the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and adjoining streams and nullahs.
Commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab have been directed to remain on alert.
The Director General of PDMA has specifically instructed district administrations near the Sutlej River to remain vigilant, with residents inside the riverbed ordered to shift to safer places immediately.
Furthermore, provincial departments including Local Government, Agriculture, Irrigation, Health, Forests, Livestock, and Transport have been placed on high alert. Citizens are advised to contact the PDMA helpline 1129 in case of any emergency.
