India releases more water into Chenab, Pakistan raises alert

The River Chenab is likely to experience severe flooding within the next 24 to 36 hours after India opened all spillways of the swollen Salal Dam on Sunday. Authorities have issued another warning about the potential flood.
Meanwhile, over 2,300 villages have been inundated, crops across millions of acres have been destroyed, and more than 1.5 million people have been displaced due to widespread flooding from Sialkot to Lahore, Kasur to Bahawalnagar, and Gujrat to Jhang.
The death toll from the floods has risen to 33, with over 600,000 people evacuated.
Thousands of livestock have perished, road links between villages and cities have been cut off, and internet services remain suspended.
Rivers Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab continue to flow at dangerously high levels, posing ongoing risks to affected regions.
180 villages flooded in Jhang
As many as 180 villages have been flooded while crops grown over hundreds of acres of land have been destroyed after the River Chenab burst its banks in Jhang.
People stuck in floodwaters were shifted to safe locations on boats.
High Floods Continue Across Punjab, Thousands Affected
The water flow at Head Trimmu has risen to 260,000 cusecs, while rivers remained in high flood at Head Khanki and Qadirabad, according to the latest reports.
140 Villages Inundated in Shujabad
Floodwaters from the River Ravi have entered 140 villages in Tehsil Shujabad, Multan, while the river remains at extremely high flood levels at Head Baloki and Chichawatni. Meanwhile, the water level at Jasarr is again rising.
Similarly, the River Sutlej is in extremely high flood at Ganda Singh Wala.
Residents of Theme Park Lahore Seek Assistance
Around 10,000 residents of the Theme Park housing society in Lahore lost their homes and belongings when floodwater from the River Ravi entered their area four days ago.
The water initially reached a depth of 20 feet but has since receded to 12 feet.
Residents have appealed to the government for immediate help.
Water Levels in River Ravi Start Dropping
After previously peaking at 220,000 cusecs, water levels in the River Ravi are now declining.
According to PDMA reports, levels at Jasarr have fallen to 80,220 cusecs, while Siphon records 77,430 cusecs and Shahdara 76,700 cusecs.
River Sutlej Floods Bahawalpur Villages
The River Sutlej has burst its banks in Bahawalpur, flooding nearby villages and forcing residents to relocate to safer areas.
Locals have requested government relief, including waivers on Kissan Card and Tractor Scheme loans.
Evacuations Underway in Multan
Authorities have evacuated residents from Basti Cheena, Basti Pipli, and Kotla Sadaat in Multan district.
The district administration and police remain on high alert.
Nullah Palkhu Remains in Low Flood
Even though water levels in the Chenab have decreased, Nullah Palkhu in Wazirabad remains in low flood.
Road connections between villages are still severed, causing major inconvenience.
Over 2 Million Affected in Punjab
Punjab PDMA Director-General Irfan Ali Kathia said that floods have severely affected over 2 million people in the province, with 33 fatalities reported.
He confirmed that the flow at Head Trimmu reached 361,633 cusecs and noted some decrease in the Sutlej at Kasur.
PDMA is conducting its largest-ever rescue operation in Punjab, focusing on saving lives and providing care in relief camps.
DG Kathia also warned that floodwater drainage will take time due to ongoing rains and urban flooding challenges.
Approximately 2,200 villages have been heavily impacted.
NDMA Provides Food Aid
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) continues distributing food in relief camps across six flood-affected districts.
Eight trucks carrying supplies were sent to Wazirabad and Hafizabad, while aid has already been dispatched to Narowal and Sialkot.
Preparations are underway to support flood-affected communities in Chiniot and Jhang.
