Wild Poliovirus Type 1 Found in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer District

According to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio at the National Institute of Health (NIH), the presence of Wild Poliovirus Type 1 has been confirmed in a sewage sample collected from Diamer.

A government official stated that a special anti-polio campaign was conducted in Diamer and adjoining districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during which 159,525 children were administered polio drops.

It is worth noting that Diamer is the native district of Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar.

The official added that the polio program is strictly following a vaccination schedule to protect children from the crippling virus and prevent its spread.

From July 21 to 25, a special anti-polio campaign will be carried out in the border union councils of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to align with Afghanistan’s sub-national polio campaign.
